It's snowing here- big, soft, fluffy flakes. And it's beginning to stick on places not well trod or driven upon. I'm home early as school was closed due to an electricity outage. I may not be in school tomorrow if the snow persists - fingers crossed ;) Of course, all the pupils are well excited and hopeful of no school tomorrow - and so are us teachers!

:-) I envy you! We just had a centimeter of snow during the weekend. I love snow so much, but it gets rarer and rarer in the past years. Send some over, will you? :-)

Well, the snow has kind of gone on the well travelled roads today. But, we have more forecast tonight. I got to my school to find it was closed today, but that wasn't a problem as I could attend a course i'd been booked on for Weds, Thurs and Fri - Student Assistance Programme training, and it seems to be rather interesting, different ... and we have to go through the programme in order to become facilitators ... it's all about helping pupils (or adults) by listening to them and letting them talk about their emotional experiences and learn respect and empathy by doing so and raising self-esteem, confidence, worth and the like ...

I hope the snow isn't too troublesome as I'd hate to wait until July to complete my training ...

That sounds like a great programme! Is it based on Carl Rogers?
:iconartwyrd:
I don't think so. The person who created it and is the sole trainer is an american lady called Cheryl Watkins and she came up with it after reading lots of different research and stuff ...

Ah, I see. The empathy thing reminded me of Carl Rogers.
:iconartwyrd:
Empathy, emotional intelligence, self-love, and so on all seem to be really common ideas running through all kinds of self-help and counselling and therapies, and teaching proper listening skills is something that is really needed by so many ... I was talking about it today with some of my care assisstants in my classes and we all agree on it and other things such as role models are tv stars or video games nowadays rather than parents or teachers ...

Very true! I guess though that most of the work is (loosely) based on the work of Rogers, who started the whole empathy thing back in the 40s and 50s of the last century (which sounds like ages ago :-))

Yeah, and sad that teachers and even parents loose their status as role models :( When I read that Dark Knight, the last Batman movie, just gets a PG rating of 13 in the US I really ask myself where this world is going. I found the violence in the movie very disturbing.

So, it is good that you and your colleagues take that course. This really makes a difference!
