Landscape Experiment 30July12 by Artwyrd Landscape Experiment 30July12 by Artwyrd
I have spent the day working on this. I have used Rotring pens, watercolour paints and metallic watercolours on watercolour paper to create this imaginary landscape.

I thought I'd use colours that represent the different seasons, as well as autumnal and spring/summer trees. Spirals and curls are a feature of my artworks, as well as the highly detailed pen lines/textures.

I find it easy to do this kind of work, yet if I was to try to express a real landscape, I would end up bogged down in trying to make it real, to get it perfect, to use realistic colours ...

I've had a ponder about such things in my journal today...but I've enjoyed working on this and am pleased, mostly, with it. It's certainly something to continue experimenting with.

Oh, it's 4" x 6" in size, if you were wondering!

Wow, I'm just a loss of words for this style of work. Incredible, as usual, and definitely full of details so lots to discover about this. Excellent work. I can totally relate to that perfectionistic notion of realism art because it does that to me as well--that's why I have a greater appreciation for this type of art. So much more expressive.

I don't think a 'real' landscape could contain a fraction of the joy in this one. It's wonderful.

I really like this concept and hope you will experiment with it more. As soon as I saw the full picture, I thought it would be associated with the four elements in the astrology books, earth, water, fire and air. This is, to my way of thinkin', intricate, but graceful and balanced. Ya done good! (as usual)

Who makes the metallic watercolors? I don't think I've come across them yet. But, then, I haven't been looking because I didn't know that such existed.

You are the one, I think, who introduced me to the Derwent Inktense pencils, and I am still practicing with them. lol. If I live long enough, I'll get the hang of it, I hope?

I will be experimenting with it more - I've struggled with landscapes for years, trees ending up as froth, too much detail to make the landscape look anything other than a scribble. Thank you for your lovely words about the work - they're much appreciated.

Yup, the four elements are represented there as the four seasons rather than the elements themselves! The thought crossed my mind as I was working on it!

Yup, metallic watercolours. I use Cosmic Shimmer's colours, though there are other brands available such as Lumiarte's H20's. Just search google for them! Oddly, they're marketed as paints for crafts, yet I find them wonderful to use in my art, but then I have an inner raven that loves sparkle and shimmer! I also make use of Uni-Ball's metallic and 'glitter' pens in my work too, though they don't produce as fine a line as the watercolour paints with a fine brush can.

I like my inktense pencils, and they would work well on this kind of art, methinks. Getting the intensity of colour I like with watercolours can be a tad problematical, even using the paint from tubes.
